Job Title: Director of Governmental Affairs

Statement of Purpose
The director of governmental affairs provides leadership and direction for the State Bar’s Legislative Program. They are responsible for developing, managing and implementing strategies for legislative issues of interest to the State Bar and communicating with Bar members about relevant legislation affecting the legal profession. The director also serves as a liaison to the Georgia judiciary and other legal stakeholder groups at the Georgia General Assembly.

About the Bar
The State Bar of Georgia exists to foster among the members of the Bar of this state the principles of duty and service to the public; to improve the administration of justice; and to advance the science of law. All persons authorized to practice law in this state are required to be members.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the State Bar’s elected leadership and Board of Governors to develop and implement the organization’s government relations strategy.
  • Identify and track key legislative issues of concern to the practice of law and the operation of the state’s judicial branch.
  • Assist the State Bar Sections with drafting and strategizing potential legislative initiatives.
  • Serve as support staff to State Bar committees, including the Advisory Committee on Legislation, the Bench and Bar Committee, and the Judicial Qualifications Nominating Commission.
  • Actively communicate new activity and legislative changes to State Bar Section leadership throughout the legislative session.
  • Apply First Amendment compelled speech and compelled association analysis to prospective initiatives and actions contemplated by Bar leadership.
  • Draft regular legislative updates and other correspondence for bar members and bar leadership while the General Assembly is in session.
  • Advocate for state appropriations and funding to support targeted grant programs for civil legal services for low-income Georgians.
  • Manage outside legislative consultants, as well as relationships with other specialty bar associations and interest groups working at the State Capitol.
  • Maintain an active presence at the State Capitol during the 40-day legislative session, including regular attendance in House and Senate Judiciary hearings.
  • Prepare Bar members to testify before state House and Senate committees on State Bar initiatives.
  • Maintain communication with elected and appointed state public officials, their staff and other persons influential in state policy, legislation and regulation.
  • Keep Bar leaders updated on political and policy trends and developments.
  • Field requests from government officials, including requests for government engagement and event participation.
  • Plan and execute engagement events to facilitate relationships between State Bar leadership and elected officials.
  • Serve as a speaker on panels, at luncheons and CLEs discussing the State Bar’s legislative initiatives and how to be an effective advocate at the State Capitol.

Essential Functions

  • Interface with elected officials.
  • Plan and execute goals within the restrictions set forth for a quasi-governmental entity or governmental entity.
  • Support committees with administrative tasks, such as sending meeting notices, preparing agendas, taking minutes and providing supporting materials.
  • Interact with and support the public and State Bar staff, members, volunteers, committee/board members and leaders in a timely and professional manner.

Education, Training and Experience

  • A minimum of five years of experience in government affairs or as senior staff to state government appointed or elected officials.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • A bachelor’s degree in political science, business administration, communications or related curriculum is required. Graduation from an accredited law school and State Bar of Georgia membership strongly preferred.
  • Prior involvement with the federal and state policymaking processes.
  • A history of establishing trustworthy relationships with elected officials, judges, executive leadership, and members of a professional trade association.
  • Expertise in policy issues that impact the legal profession, lawyer licensing and regulation, and the judiciary.
  • Knowledge of Georgia’s judicial branch and its various classes of courts.

Paralegal | Client Assistance Program | Office of the General Counsel

Job Title: Client Assistance Program Paralegal
Department: Office of the General Counsel
Reports to: Assistant General Counsel/Director, Client Assistance Program

Statement of Purpose
The primary purpose of this position is to provide paralegal support to the CAP director to execute the responsibilities of CAP of the OGC. The position is expected to assist OGC staff in all aspects of the disciplinary process. This position will require interaction with the public, the staff of the State Bar of Georgia, members, volunteers, committees and leaders.

Supervisors and Organizational Structure
This position falls under the CAP department which also consists of an assistant general counsel/director, paralegals, and a legal assistant; however, the CAP Department is part of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) and as such, under the direct authority of the general counsel.

This position reports directly to the assistant general counsel/director of CAP; however, depending on the duties being performed, this position may report directly and/or indirectly to the general counsel and the deputy general counsel—discipline.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide paralegal and administrative assistance as needed and required.
  • Take calls from the public concerning issues or problems; determine the appropriate ways to assist, route or refer callers.
  • Conduct investigations into allegations of a lack of communication between attorneys and their clients.
  • Contact attorneys to resolve grievances based on communication issues between attorneys and their clients.
  • Communicate with complainants and respondents regarding the status of cases.
  • Enter pertinent information from each call taken into the CAP log database for tracking purposes.
  • Draft correspondence to complainants, respondents and others.

Required Experience and Skills

Education, Training and Experience

  • College degree and/or paralegal certificate.
  • Knowledge of legal procedures.
  • Litigation experience preferred.
  • Administrative experience preferred.

Tools, Equipment

  • Working knowledge of standard office equipment, including, but not limited to, dictation equipment, fax machine, copy machine, telephone switchboard and voicemail equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office program, particularly Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat.
  • Knowledge of computerized legal research programs such as Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, etc.

Audio Visual Coordinator  | Conference Center

Job Title: Audio Visual Coordinator

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this role is to manage and coordinate all tasks pertaining to A/V maintenance and functioning of the Conference Center at the State Bar of Georgia and assist the Savannah and Tifton offices remotely when needed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision of all technical operations on the Conference Center floor.
  • Install and set up audiovisual equipment for events and presentations daily.
  • Maintain building digital signage to portray appropriate scheduling and floor plans daily.
  • Maintain equipment and A/V supply inventory, keeping items up to date and making necessary purchases, if needed.
  • Collaborate with event organizers and clients to determine audiovisual needs in advance.
  • Responsible for gathering Conference Center technology upgrade quotes from outside vendors for software and hardware needs on a yearly basis.
  • Maintain audio and video equipment and work with outside contractors for repairs as needed.
  • Assists conference center manager with the coordination and organization of all Conference Center operations, including, but not limited to:
    • Scheduling functions
    • Showing facilities
    • Budget planning
    • Law-related education
    • Mock trials
    • Catering, food and beverage
    • Facilities, furniture, rooms set-up, cleaning
    • Parking validation
  • Assists with the Business Center and Lawyers Lounge.
  • Assists with copying, faxes, scanning and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Program Coordinator | Institute of Continuing Legal Education 

Job Title: Program Coordinator

Statement of Purpose
The program coordinator facilitates the development and production of continuing legal education (CLE) programs for members of the legal profession.

Duties

The position requires physical labor, to include lifting or standing for extended periods of time, as well as the ability to work early mornings, weekends, and evenings, as needed.

Program Planning

  • Coordinate and support the development of in-person and virtual continuing legal education (CLE) programs.
  • Collaborate with the assistant director of operations (ADO) and programs manager (PM) on an ongoing basis to ensure the CLE programs are executed seamlessly.
  • Coordinate the administrative details of CLE programs from program assignment to closeout.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with attorneys and senior level management to support the development of agendas for CLE programs
  • Maintain and update program agendas, taking special care to ensure all program and faculty details are complete and correct, and appropriately track and update information, communicating all changes to other department teams, as needed.
  • Respond to all communications (internal and external) in a timely manner, keeping PM up to date on the status of ongoing projects.
  • Collaborate on the marketing of assigned ICLE programs.
  • Monitor ICLE program schedule and communicate with fellow staff members to anticipate needs of program chairs, program speakers and program attendees.
  • Prepare budgets for programs and communicate with program chairs, section leaders and State Bar departments regarding program budget.
  • Execute program day logistics.
  • Complete post-program work for the on-demand (recorded) production of programs.

Other

  • Collaborate with co-workers in ICLE and in other State Bar of Georgia departments.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely delivery of contracts, bills, and expense reports to appropriate Bar staff.
  • Work as part of a team; interact with and support State Bar of Georgia staff, members, and volunteers.
  • Support Bar staff in any assigned responsibilities.
  • Comply with State Bar of Georgia policies.
  • Available to provide timely and personal attention to the public, and to State Bar of Georgia staff, members and volunteers.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
  • Ability to become familiar with organization specific programs and software.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with program management, event and or meeting planning.
  • Experience in law firms, government legal departments or bar associations is preferred.
  • Excellent collaboration and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal, client service, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter, capable of multi-tasking and possess impeccable attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.

Travel

  • In-state and out-of-state travel required.
  • Travel expenses reimbursed pursuant to State Bar policies and procedures.
